A record 323 active drug shortages were tracked by ASHP in the first quarter of 2024.

Federal actions to address drug shortages include the PREPARE Act, Pediatric Cancer Drug Supply Act, White House Council on Supply Chain Resilience, and FTC investigation into GPO practices.

Other proposals include incentives for hospitals to maintain a buffer stock of essential medications.
